Sanremo does not have its own major passenger airport, but reaching the Italian Riviera by air is straightforward. For many international visitors, Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (NCE) in France is the most convenient gateway. The airport is roughly 65 kilometres west of Sanremo by road, making it a useful starting point for a holiday that combines the French and Italian Rivieras.

From Nice Airport to Sanremo by train

Rail travel is an appealing option if you would rather avoid driving. From the airport, take the tram or another local connection to a suitable Nice railway station, then travel east towards the Italian border. Most journeys involve changing trains at Ventimiglia before continuing to Sanremo on an Italian regional service. Allow around two to three hours for the complete airport-to-town journey, depending on connections and waiting times.

Check both French SNCF and Italian Trenitalia timetables before departure. Tickets may need to be purchased separately, and late arrivals can make public transport less convenient.

Renting a car or booking a transfer

Driving from Nice Airport to Sanremo usually takes approximately one to one and a half hours in normal traffic. The A8 motorway in France connects with Italy’s A10, although tolls apply and holiday traffic can extend the journey. If you rent a car, make sure the rental company permits cross-border travel into Italy and check for any additional conditions or charges.

A pre-booked private transfer can be a comfortable alternative, particularly for families or travelers carrying substantial luggage. Compare the full price in advance and confirm your drop-off address.

Practical tips for arriving

Both France and Italy are in the Schengen Area, but you should still carry valid travel identification. Remember that the streets of Sanremo’s historic La Pigna district are steep and often unsuitable for cars. If you are arriving with heavy bags, choose accommodation with easy access from the station or a road.

Nice Airport also gives you the opportunity to add a stop in Menton or another French Riviera town before reaching Sanremo. With a little planning, the journey can become an enjoyable introduction to the Mediterranean coast.
